Machang, Malaysia : Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) is confident that it will succeed in achieving the government’s target of 250,000 students by 2015, said Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Sahul Hamid Abu Bakar.
He said his confidence is based on the increasing number of students in all campuses, now totalling 180,000.
“Looking at the progress, we believe we can obtain 250,000 students by 2015,in fact three years earlier than scheduled,” he told reporters after a farewell ceremony for UiTM Kelatan director, Dr Hussin @ Mohamad Ab Rahman, here today.
Also present were International Trade and Industry Minister Mustapa Mohamed and new UiTM Kelantan campus director, Assoc Prof Dr Mohd Shukri Omar.
Dr Sahul Hamid said their target to increase the number of students will be achieved especially with the setting up of five new campuses nationwide in Jasin (Melaka), Pasir Gudang (Johor), Mukah (Sarawak), Klang (Selangor) and Raub (Pahang).
He said the courses to be offered at the new campuses will focus on fields that have new job markets and can help generate the national economy.
When asked on the proposal to set up a permanent campus for the UiTM branch in Kota Baharu, he said it depended on the availability of suitable land as it was under the state government’s jurisdiction.
“There definitely is a need for a permanent campus in the city, but it also depends on suitability of the location and facilities available,” he added.
