Mumbai : Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara Saturday graciously accepted the World Cup final loss, saying they were clearly outdone by an excellent Indian team at the Wankhede Stadium here.
“I am very proud of everyone – especially Mahela Jayawardene – who rose to the occasion and got a great hundred,” said Sangakkara.
“But when you are playing India, looking at the batsmen they have, anything under 350 seems not to be enough. It’s been a great tournament for us, and a great team effort from us today. But the way India played, they really deserved the tag of favourites,” he said.
“Both Sri Lanka and India can be really proud of the cricket we have played today. Congratulations to India. You were the better side. Gautam Gambhir was outstanding, and when the occasion demanded Mahendra Singh Dhoni stood up and converted. The only way to stop India is to get at least seven wickets,” said Sangakkara.
