According to reports, the suicide attacker attempted to cross the security check 700 metres from the residence of a senior army general. However, when a police official resisted, he blew himself, killing six people and wounding 16, reports Online news agency.

Two assistant sub inspectors and a cyclist were among those killed.

Police labelled it a suicide attack and said body parts of the attacker had been found but the head was missing.

According to military sources, the area is close to the Army House. The residences and homes of several senior army officers are also located close by.

The injured have been shifted to the Combined Medical Hospital for treatment. It is feared that the death toll could rise.

Security and law enforcement agencies have cordoned off the entire area and started investigations.

Police in the capital Islamabad had received intelligence reports a couple of days ago of two suicide bombers entering the city and planning to target key military installations.
