Jagatsinghpur : Police Thursday arrested a man for allegedly decapitating an idol of Laxmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, in Orissa’s Jagatsinghpur district.
Kalindi Das and Bulu Khuntia allegedly decapitated the clay idol that had been installed at a pandal (marquee) on the occasion of Laxmi puja in Jayapura village, about 120 km from state capital Bhubaneswar.
Loknath Mallick, in charge of the local police station, told IANS that the two men destroyed the idol in an inebriated condition.
Police arrested Das after 500 agitated residents blocked the Cuttack-Paradeep road and disrupted vehicular movements for about four hours to prevent him from escaping. However, Khuntia is absconding.
