Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government’s spokesperson Jay Narayan Vyas Thursday said that Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal’s remarks regarding the Nanavati Commission, which is probing the 2002 communal riots, and the process of justice for the riot victims were an insult of the judicial mechanism.
Sibal said at Ahmedabad Wednesday that the process of justice for the 2002 riot victims was painfully slow. He said he was pained at the lack of urgency and sensitivity in which the cases were being dealt.
“While constituting the Nanavati Commission to probe the riots, the Bharatiya Janata Party had said that its report would be available in four months. Nine years later, it is yet to submit the report,” Sibal said.
Countering Sibal, Vyas said the allegations made by a senior advocate like Sibal raised questions against the creditability of the judicial system.
Giving details of the time taken by various probe panels set up by Congress governments, he said that the Marwah Commission and the Mishra Commission probing the anti-Sikh riots of 1984 during the Congress rule in Delhi took 13 to 17 years to come up with the report.
“The Union minister’s comments are unfair,” he added.
Vyas said that the Nanavati Commission was formed as per the recommendations of the apex court and it was the only commission appointed by a state government which takes even the chief minister and other ministers under its ambit.
The commission has already examined 44,445 affidavits, questioned more than 1,000 witnesses and has already given the first part of its report in 2008.
