Congress announces agitation to oust Tripura’s Left Front

Agartala : Enthused by the recent assembly election results which included the Left parties’ rout in Kerala and West Bengal, Tripura’s opposition Congress Saturday announced a seven-month long agitational programme “against the misrule of the Left Front government”.

“The pre-scheduled programme would start by ‘padayatra’ (state-wide march) on Sunday. The series of movement includes mass demonstration, rallies, strike, mass deputation to the governor and others besides awareness campaign for the people,” state Congress president Surajeet Datta told reporters.

“Central party leaders including president Sonia Gandhi and general secretary Rahul Gandhi would also participate in these agitations to oust Left Front from the power.”

“Unlike previous years, we have started movement against the misrule of the Left Front government in Tripura well ahead of the state assembly elections in 2013. The non-stop programme would continue till Dec 31,” said Datta, a former minister.

Congress leader Ratan Lal Nath said: “The pradesh Congress in close associations with all its frontal bodies would continue unrelenting struggle against the Left Front government in the state.”

The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), the dominant partner of the ruling Left Front, has, however, rejected the Congress’s allegation of misrule in Tripura.

“Why the Congress is so inspired by the recent assembly poll results. They performed very poor results both in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Following Bangladesh’s support, top militant leaders nabbed across the border and that resulted peace prospect in Assam. Congress got that advantage in the state,” CPI-M spokesman Gautam Das said.

He alleged that the Congress’s “so-called movement is only to disturb the peace and to create troubles in the Left ruled state”.
