Hyderabad: Students of Osmania University called off their indefinite fast on the fourth day Thursday following an appeal from various political parties fighting for a separate Telangana state.
As the condition of some students had deteriorated, leaders of various parties rushed to Osmania University this evening and convinced the students to end their fast.
Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) convenor M. Kodandaram, Telangana Praja Front leader Gaddar, Congress MP Madhu Goud Yaskhi and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Bandaru Dattatreya offered fruit juice to the students.
Demanding that the central government initiate the process for formation of a separate state, about 50 students had launched the indefinite fast July 11. Some of the fasting students had developed fever and their blood pressure had come down. Five of them were Wednesday admitted to Gandhi Hospital while the condition of some others deteriorated Thursday.
Osmania University Joint Action Committee (OU JAC) has also called off their proposed march to assembly Friday.
Meanwhile, Congress leaders from Telangana Thursday night called off their two-day fast. They said they ended the hunger strike 12 hours before the scheduled time in the wake of bomb blasts in Mumbai.
Senior leader and state minister K. Jana Reddy urged the central leadership of the party to immediately initiate the process for formation of a Telangana state.
He said the Congress would get strengthened in Telangana by carving out the separate state. Reddy also voiced the apprehension that if the process is delayed, the movement may intensify creating law and order problems.
