Kabul : Six NATO-led foreign and three Afghan soldiers were killed and 19 wounded when Taliban fighters ambushed their patrol in eastern Afghanistan, the military said Saturday.
Taliban militants attacked the Afghan and NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades from multiple positions Friday when the soldiers were on foot patrol, ISAF said in a statement.
Eight ISAF service members and 11 Afghan soldiers were also wounded in the fighting, the statement said, adding that the wounded soldiers were evacuated to ISAF medical facilities in eastern Afghanistan.
The joint forces repelled the insurgent attack with small arms, machine guns, mortars, artillery and close air support, ISAF said.
“The remains of an insurgent were recovered following the initial contact,” the statement said.
The statement did not disclose the nationality of the soldiers. The majority of the forces in the eastern region are US troops.
