Pakistan seeks support for UNSC seat

By IANS,

United Nations : Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar has sought support from the global community for her country’s candidature for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

“Pakistan is at your service, and I request your most valuable support for our candidature,” Khar said at the 66th session of the UN General Assembly Monday.

Pakistan will actively work to advance the world’s shared goals of promoting peace, harmony and security if elected, Pakistan’s official APP news agency quoted her as saying.

Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan are contesting for the Asian seat on the 15-member council being vacated by Lebanon. The election will take place Oct 21.

The 193-member General Assembly holds elections for non-permanent members by a secret ballot.

Khar reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the principles enshrined in the UN Charter as she focused on her country’s role in UN peacekeeping missions around the world.

“Till date more than 100,000 Pakistani peacekeepers have participated in 38 peacekeeping missions around the world and 125 Pakistani blue helmets have laid down their lives in the service of humanity.

“As a caring member of the international community, we have maintained this high-level of deployment despite domestic constraints arising from the ongoing fight against terrorism,” she said at the gathering.
