Srinagar: A special court Tuesday rejected a plea by relatives of National Conference activist Sayeed Muhammad Yousuf for a CBI probe into his custodial death here Sep 30.
Special judge Mohammad Yusuf held that the court did not have any jurisdiction to order a Central Bureau of Investigation probe.
Yousuf’s relatives had also sought directions from the anti-corruption court for registration of an FIR over his death. The court rejected this too.
Yousuf died Sep 30 in police custody, a day after he visited Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s house. The death has caused a political storm in the state.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) alleged that Yousuf died in mysterious circumstances after he was called to Omar’s residence along with two other National Conference workers.
On Oct 12, a forensic science laboratory report confirmed that Yousuf died of cardio-respiratory arrest and not due to any torture.
