Bhopal : After WikiLeaks revealed that Dow Chemicals was using a spy to keep a watch on activists fighting for the cause of the Bhopal gas tragedy, the activists said Monday they were not surprised to hear the news.

“We are not surprised about what Dow is doing. Everyone knows what kind of company Dow is, seeing their history across the world,” activist Satinath Sarangi told IANS here.

“But the serious issue is, the spying agency Stratfor also works for Pakistan’s ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence). Moreover, Stratfor is not only watching activists’ activities against Dow but is peeking into their personal lives too,” Sarangi claimed.

“The organisers of the London Olympics and Dow have been constantly saying that the company has nothing to with the Bhopal gas tragedy. But this (WikiLeaks’) information clearly shows once again that Dow is involved as it is concerned about its business interests,” veteran activist Abdul Jabbar told IANS.

“A merger does not mean that their culpability in the gas tragedy has ended. There are several cases still pending against them in America, India and in Madhya Pradesh. Hence, they are keeping an eye on us,” he added.

A WikiLeaks cable published Monday revealed that Dow Chemicals had hired the services of a private intelligence firm to spy on activists who were fighting for the rights of the victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy.
