Jammu : A post office with four mail runners (postmen), who may cover a distance of 60 km daily, was inaugurated Tuesday at Cha-Lungnak in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ladakh region.
The post office that falls in Kargil district will employ only locals to deliver and collect mail.
Inaugurating the facility, the state’s Postmaster General Samuel John said: “This is 109th post office in Ladakh, and it will employ all locals to ensure its proper functioning.”
Mail runners are sometimes the only means of communication in remote areas. They cover long distances on foot, braving hostile weather and rough terrains.
John along with Chief Executive Officer of Kargil Kacho Ahmad Ali Khan also flagged off the exclusive mail van for Kargil-Leh-Kargil to make on-time delivery of mails, parcels and other things in the region.
They said similar van would soon also be launched between Kargil and Srinagar.
Talking to media persons, John said: “Post India has recruited 264 employees in Jammu and Kashmir, including 14 from Ladakh region.”
Last year, the postal sector in the state grew by 23 percent. The post office savings bank deposits recorded a growth of 40 percent — the highest in the country. “The J&K postal service has achieved second place after Karnataka in terms of Speed Post.”
