Mumbai: Abu Asim Azmi, MLA and president of Samajwadi Party, Mumbai and Maharashtra, has urged Police not to harass and implicate innocents for the Azad Maidan violence. Addressing a press conference after meeting chief minister Prithviraj Chauhan along with a Muslim delegation on Monday, Azmi, however, lauded the police for controlling the violence in a short time.
Azmi strongly condemned attack on police and media persons during protest demonstration at Azad Maidan on Saturday against the killings in Myanmar and Assam. “Police should take action against the perpetrators of the violence but innocents must not be harassed and implicated,” said Azmi.
He met CM along with state minority minister Arif Naseem Khan and a delegation of Muslim leaders from Aman Committee, Ulema Council, Jamaat Islami, Jamiat Ulema, Muslim Personal Law Board and Milli Council on Monday.
Azmi said the delegation told the CM how after the violence police were beating youths on bikes and arresting them. He said a youth name Aftab Alam was killed in police firing at JJ Marg flyover. They youth had nothing to do with this agitation which was held in Azad Maidan, said Azmi. “This exposes the highhandedness of police. After the violence when people went to get their vehicles parked outside the Azad Maidan police arrested them and lodged case of 302 against them. This is sheer injustice,” said Azmi.
He said some communal forces are trying to instigate communal violence in the state after this incident. Attacking BJP and Shiv Sena he said leaders of these organizations are giving provocative speeches and trying to vitiate the atmosphere but they will not be allowed to succeed in their plan.
