Chandigarh : Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Vijender Jain Wednesday administered the oath of office to five new judges – including the first woman lawyer from the bar to be elevated.
Daya Chaudhary, 48, also has the distinction of being the first woman president of the Punjab and Harayana bar in 1999. Chaudhary was sworn in along with Rakesh Kumar Garg, Rakesh Kumar Jain, K.S. Ahluwalia and Jaswant Singh.
Though the high court has sitting women judges, all of them are from the judicial services of Punjab and Haryana states. No woman lawyer from the bar had been elevated to the bench.
With the appointment of the new judges, the strength of the high court goes up to 42.
