Moscow : The United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation have used the European arms control system as a means to achieve their political goals, a Russian military source confirmed on Saturday.
Following his recent meetings with the US and NATO representatives, the General Staff chief of Russia’s Armed Forces, Yuri Baluyevski, said that the reciprocal actions of his country are not political shows.
Baluyevski said that the moratorium imposed on the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe by Moscow responds to a real need of Russia; due to the evident military disadvantage with respect to its western partners.
He recalled that none of the members of the western alliance, including the US, has ratified the CFE, agreed on 1999 due to the new geopolitical situation of the region
Reiterating the stance of the Russian Ministry of Defense on the issue, the general said that the arms control treaty totally suits Washington and NATO.
The Russian military added that the US and its allies have tried to use CFE in the last few years as a mechanism of political pressure on Russia.
In a press conference on Saturday, Baluyevski said that Russian General Staff has evidences on alleged US plans to site strategic elements of the missile defense system near the borderlines of his country.
