Hyderabad: Students vs. Administration battle continues in English and Foreign Language University (EFLU) as 24 hours protest called by Struggle Committee for the Justice of Mudassir Kamran brought university management to notice.
EFLU students hit the campus by organizing a series of protest programs at Sagar Square in the campus from March 29-30th. At many areas in the campus black flags were erected, posters and paintings demanding justice for Mudassir was setup at every wall of the campus. Students took out protest march, presented street play, conducted documentary screening, photo exhibition, open hearings and public meetings, demanding free and fair probe in the suicide of Mudassir.
Mudassir Kamran a 29 year old Kashmiri Ph.D. student committed suicide in the campus on March 2nd, after police took him to the station on the complain of university proctor regarding some personal fights between Mudassir and his friend Waseem.
Mudassir suicide created tension both in the valley and in EFLU where students observed a week long bandh, since day one they were demanding suspension of university proctor Harish Vijara and fair inquiry in the matter.
Meanwhile University administration and police tried to sideline the whole issue by terming Mudassir homosexual and mentally insane.
This 24 hour long protest program was in continuance of the action of the students to build up pressure on the university administration. At the end of 24 hour protest an open public meeting was organized by Struggle Committee which was attended by eminent civil right activists. Students also invited Delhi University professor S.A.R. Geelani to the meeting.
Mr. Geelani addressing the meeting demanded a fair and free inquiry so to unearth the true facts behind Mudassir’s suicide. S.A.R. Geelani also applauded the determination of EFLU students and said their protest has given a ray of hope and consoled Kashmiri people that there are people in India which hold sympathy with them and are standing up for justice.
Mr. Geelani attacking directly the university administration said they are dancing on the tunes of Central Govt. to suppress facts thus fuelling the unrest in Kashmir due to their sloppy treatment of the issue. He said Kashmiri medical officer had said that there were torture marks on the body of Mudassir which also need to be investigated. Mr. Geelani supporting the firm resolve of the students demanded suspension of proctor and constitution of fair and free inquiry committee, Mr. Geelani said that he is hopeful that truth will prevail.
Former dean of social sciences Hyderabad Ccentral University and civil rights activist Prof. Hara Gopal expressed his sorrow on the death of Mudassir and termed this incident as suicide of institution. He also condemned the actions of University administration of calling up police to solve the disputes between two students. Mr. Haragopal maintained that EFLU administration led a bad precedent by taking a small fight between students to the police.
Ms. Vimlakka and Comrade Sandhya of the Telangana United Front, Hamed Mohd Khan of Movement for Peace and Justice and Amjedullah Khan of Majlis Bachao Tehreek also spoke on the occasion and expressed their solidarity with the protesting students.
