Bengaluru: A group of youths belonging to the Sangh Parivar, pelted stones at the Nejar Mosque, in Kallianpur, Udupi on Tuesday April 2.
The incident occurred at midnight around 12.30 AM, resulting in breaking the window panes and partly damaging a wall. According to the locals, a similar attack on the mosque had taken place in the aftermath of 2008 Mumbai attacks, but no action was taken by the police then.
The attackers, as told by the police to media, had first beaten up a Muslim youth Mohammed Iqbal (31) at 10.30 PM, who was returning home after attending a friend’s ‘Mehndi’ function. Iqbal was admitted to district government hospital.
Udupi district in Karnataka has seen a series of communally motivated skirmishes for a month now. Last month, a Muslim house was attacked by Hindutva activists, only because the family had a bull in its possession, a group of Muslim youths belonging to the Welfare Party of India were also attacked in a deliberate attempt to flare up communal tensions.
A gram panchayat president and with few others have been arrested so far. The assaulters are said to be activists of Sangh Parivar and the ruling BJP.
