Ankara : Turkish jet fighter raided Kurdish rebel targets in northern Iraq early Sunday.
The jet fighters hit rebel positions close to the border with Turkey and the Qandil mountain, which straddles the Iraq-Iran border.
The military said that some 50 warplanes were involved in the air raids.
Turkey has previously hit Iraqi territory with ground-based artillery and with helicopters.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan congratulated Turkey’s military on successful mission which was followed by cannon fire directed to the rebel targets.
“I am happy to say that according to our initial assessment, this operation which was carried out under night conditions, was a success,” Erdogan said.
