Workshop on sexual harassment at AMU

Aligarh: The Faculty of Law, Aligarh Muslim University organized a one-day Workshop on “Sexual Harassment: Socio-Legal and Religious Perspective”. The main objective of holding a workshop on this topic was to create an awareness and to sensitize the students and staff of the University.

The Workshop was presided over by the Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Zameer Uddin Shah. Dr. Sumant Bhardwaj, Advocate, Supreme Court of India and Ms. Sehba Farooqui, Social Activist were the main speakers while AMU Pro-Vice Chancellor, Brig. (Retd.) S. Ahmad Ali was the guest of honour.

Prof. Iqbal Ali Khan, Dean, Faculty of Law argued that punishing the accused cannot mitigate the agony and pain of the victim. He suggested that victim should be given compensation by decreeing the movable or immovable property of the accused so that she may get at least some monetary support to face the challenges in life.

AMU Pro-Vice Chancellor, Brig (Retd.) S. Ahmad Ali said that no religion approved the harassment of women. We should behave with the girls parentally. He suggested that we should change the mindset to curb the harassment.

Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah said that University would not tolerate any type of discrimination against women. He said that the University is committed to provide them with liberty, fair and equal deal. He said fear is a key to control the harassment to women.
