Cairo : Secretary-General of the Arab League Amr Moussa said here on Saturday that the Arab foreign ministers agreed at the emergency meeting tonight that shifted from a consultative meeting to a formal meeting on an Arab integrated plan unanimously issued with respect to developments in the situation in Lebanon.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kuwait Sheikh Dr. Mohammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah headed the Kuwaiti delegation to the meeting.
Moussa said in a press conference at the conclusion of the meeting that consultations were held throughout the day, including a special meeting at his home attended by the Foreign Ministers of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar and Oman.
He added that the meeting discussed the situation in Lebanon from various aspects of fraternal spirit for two hours at his home in the framework of the Arab keenness on preserving Lebanon and overcome its current crisis.
He pointed out that the consultations focused mainly on Lebanon and then addressed a number of Arab issues.
Moussa hailed the role played by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Algeria Murad Madlasi – President of the current session – and his appreciation for such a meeting, which was restricted to only the aforementioned ministers, as well as his understanding of facilitating the holding of this gathering and to take a constructive stance to reaching an action plan which was agreed upon unanimously.
The plan includes three necessary steps to emerge from the current crisis in Lebanon which is welcoming the nomination of General Michel Suleiman to the post of the presidency and call for an immediate election in accordance with due constitutional by all Lebanese factions.
Moussa added that the Council called for an immediate agreement on the formation of a national unity government according to the constitutional principles.
He pointed out that the council also agreed on the need to begin work on drafting a new law for elections as soon as the president has been selected and the formation of the government has been completed.
Moussa said that tomorrow’s meeting of the Arab foreign ministers will be allocated only to discuss the situation in Palestine, particularly on the Palestinian track and the issue of Israeli settlements.
