UAE Red Crescent team inspects projects in Kerala

Calicut, Jan 23 (WAM): A delegation from Red Crescent Authority (RCA), which is currently on a tour in the southern Indian state of Kerala, held discussions Wednesday with the Red Cross officials in Calicut on avenues of cooperation between the two sides.

The Director of Relief and Emergency operations at RCA Abdullah Ali Al Housni, who heads the delegation and the Secretary General of Indian Red Cross in Calicut district, Rajendra Kumar stressed the need for continued cooperation between the two entities in order to effectively carry out the humanitarian and charity operations in the impoverished areas in the state.

During the meeting Al Housni gave a short exposition of the various humanitarian programmes RCA has carried out in India and its ongoing development projects aimed at alleviating the sufferings of destitute people in the country.

Kumar expressed his appreciation and gratitude to UAE for its humanitarian services in India and the initiatives aimed at giving shelter and care for the poor sections of the society.

He said that UAE’s RCA was always at the forefront in providing relief and humanitarian services at various parts of the world at times of need.

Meanwhile, RCA continued its inspection tour to asses the progress of its various projects in the state. The delegation was accompanied by UAE ambassador to India Abdullah Ibrahim Al Shehi and Deputy Vice chancellor of the ‘Markaz El Thaqafa’ university Dr. Abdul Hakim Abu Backer.

The delegation toured the Hillside school in Wyanad, 40 kilometres off the city to the high ranges. The school run by the Markaz is built in wooden frames and thatched with coconut palm leaves, and provides education for over 350 girls and boys in the mountainous region. Al Housni said that he received project studies from the officials in Kerala for the reconstruction of the school so as to provide education for 1000 students in the region, which is cut off from the township by thick forests.

The RCA delegation continued its tour to other areas of the state to inspect various other projects which included sweet-water wells and mosques completed at generous donations from UAE nationals. These projects included the Manba’al Uloom religious school and a mosque in Salama Nagar in Vaitiri region, the Al Noor hospital which provides medical and health care for more than 50 villages. The hospital is run by Markaz Al Thaqafa headquartered in Calicut. The tour also covered a number of other schools and the Al Noor Institute for people with special needs.
