Baghdad : Two Iraqis were killed and 10 wounded in an explosion near a monastery in southern Baghdad Monday, Voices of Iraq news agency quoted local authorities as saying.
The attack in the Zafaraniya area reportedly also caused damage to nearby buildings and vehicles.
In another incident, an army source told the news agency that an ambulance laden with explosives blew up near one of the main gates of the college of dentistry in Bab al-Muazam, Baghdad.
Witnesses had earlier reported a heavy blast in the vicinity. No one was reported killed, but nearby cars were damaged.
Separately, Iraqi military sources – responsible for Baghdad operations – told Voices of Iraq that security forces killed five militants, arrested 12 others and detained 26 suspects in the 24 hours to Monday.
Eight Iraqi policemen were said to have been wounded in the operations.
Meanwhile, a statement by the US military in Iraq said that joint Iraqi and US-led coalition forces detained one suspected terrorist and killed another militant during morning raids in Baghdad.
