Beijing : China said on Wednesday its relations with Taiwan are at a crucial stage due to the secessionist activities of the current president of the Island, Chen Shui-bian.
According to the spokesman of the Council of State Office for Taiwan Affairs, Yang Yi, the steps made by Taiwanese authorities constitute a serious threat for the region ó s peace and stability.
The official chiefly mentioned Chen s determination to organize a referendum, parallel to March 22 presidential elections, on the alleged entry of the Island into the United Nations under the name of Taiwan.
“We will join our fellow Taiwanese citizens in their opposition to stop those initiatives aimed at reaching the independence of Taiwan,” said Yang Yi.
He added that the most important and urgent tasks are to stop the independence attempts of the secessionists and keep peace between both sides at the Strait.
