Rome : Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was quoted as saying on Thursday that threatening Iran will be ineffective and bear no fruit, underlining the need for constant negotiations with Tehran on its nuclear case.
Mubarak made the remark in an interview with the Rome-based daily ‘La Republica’, adding that the era of threat and intimidation is over.
Asked about Iran’s alleged intervention in internal affairs of regional countries and the US president’s proposal to form an alliance against Tehran, he said that the use of force and threat would merely ignite the fire of war in the Persian Gulf, Middle East and the whole world.
Underlining the need for dialogue and diplomacy, he noted that the report of the US National Intelligence Estimates (NIE) on Iran’s nuclear program was against the incorrect interpretations of western leaders.
Responding to a question whether Egypt is to acquire nuclear energy in a reaction to Iran’s peaceful nuclear program, he said, “No, it is not so.”
“The decision has been made only for economic reasons,” he said, adding, “Egypt is to guarantee its sustainable energy resources. We will simultaneously pursue other projects in the fields of solar and wind energies in line with goals of the European Union.”
Iran is an important regional country, which can play a decisive and positive role in the Persian Gulf and the Middle East, he added.
Mubarak said that Tehran and Cairo have some minor differences of opinion and are to resume their diplomatic relations after settling the remaining problems.
