Ambedkar Association of North America (AANA), in an attempt to help the massively affected India’s poor and underprivileged communities, has come together with local grassroots organizations to provide essentials for survival. AANA has partnered with several NGOs in distributing food, masks, and other hygiene kits in various states like Bihar, UP, Delhi, Haryana, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Maharashtra.
A Covid-19 relief committee was established by the group and a donation drive was initiated among the organization’s members. The donation appeal has so far received an overwhelming response, and more than USD 17,000/- have either been collected or pledged. The allocation of funds is currently slated in four phases. The First Phase included distribution of Rs. 2,55,000/- (USD 3,500) across Maharashtra, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The Second Phase contributed relief material worth Rs. 3,40,000/- (USD 4,700) across Telengana and Haryana.
AANA is currently working with Karvan E Mohabbat, Mission Manuskey Via Adivasis, Dalits and Bahujans, Safai Kamgar Employees, Haryana Swabhiman Society and many others across the country. As AANA is a North America based Indian welfare group and works remotely, it has set strict ground rules to ensure the authenticity of organizations as well as their commitment to the cause with available resources execution on ground.
Motivated by a strongly Ambedkarite cause, AANA makes sure that the funds reach not just Bahujan but other minority organizations too, for which the established Covid-19 relief committee meets on a weekly basis to make decisions. The Committee serves different geographical locations, and its cognizance of the fact that donations won’t last long, AANA has dedicated a Facebook page (https://www.aanausa.org/donate, https://www.facebook.com/donate/1117777418575113/1882579508542275/) for accepting donations from individuals and organizations that align with its Ambedkarite ideal to work towards the upliftment of the vulnerable at an hour of distress.
Many people who have lost their daily wages are currently struggling to survive have benefited from AANA’s projects. In its latest press release, AANA has appealed to everyone to donate generously other than reaching out to colleagues, friends and neighbors for contribution to AANA COVID-19 Relief donation drive.
