“We are ready to study any plan or initiative that can stop the current escalation in Gaza Strip,” Haneya said in a statement faxed to the media.

He, however, urged that the proposal must secure Israeli withdrawal from the occupied territories, suspension of attacks and recognition of the Palestinian people’s rights and their land.

Ahmed Yousef, an aide to Haneya, also said that a long-term truce with Israel was possible if it lifted the closure on the Palestinian territories, reopened the crossings and enabled freedom of movement between Gaza and the West Bank.

Israel boosted the siege on the Gaza Strip in June last year when Hamas took over the territory by force from security troops loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

In recent weeks, Israel stepped up military pressure on the Gaza Strip in response to the home-made rockets by armed groups into southern Israel communities.
