Kuala Lumpur : An Iraqi delegate at the World Al-Azhar Alumni Multaqa Monday called on other Islamic nations to emulate Malaysia’s generosity in helping the strife-torn country following the invasion by foreign forces.
Deputy secretary-general of the Iraq Muslims Organisation, Prof Dr Abdul Sulam Kubaise, said Iraq appreciated and was grateful to Malaysia for the assistance rendered to lighten the burden of the suffering Iraqis.
“We hope more Islamic nations would come forward to help our people who are facing much hardship since the coalition forces led by the United States invaded our country.”
Abdul Sulam who took the opportunity to make the appeal during a question-and-answer session after presenting a paper, said without assistance from other Islamic nations, Iraq could be destroyed if the appalling conditions were allowed to continue.
“It is not impossible for Iraq to face the same fate as that of Palestine,” he said.
“As far as I can remember, Iraq had also helped many of your countries in the past,” he added in Arabic which was translated into Bahasa Malaysia.
His appeal for help gained the support of other paper presenters at the conference who felt that all the Islamic countries had a role to play in helping Iraq and its people as a result of the actions of the West.
The deputy academic director of Qatar University’s Syariah and Islamic Studies Faculty, Prof Dr Deen Mohammad, and other scholars like Prof Dr Abdul Majid Al-Najjar from Tunisia and Dr Hasan Mohamad Wajeh from Egypt, agreed that the troubles in Iraq must end soon in order to protect the sanctity of Islam and dignity of its followers.
Earlier, Abdul Sulam praised Malaysia for the well-organised conference, the third held so far, which managed to bring together more than a thousand Islamic ulama and intellectuals.
