The court, which had earlier proclaimed him an “absconder”, said the hearing of Angre’s bail application would be held Feb 25. Until then he will be lodged at the Thane central prison, in the district adjacent to Mumbai.

The Thane police declared Angre a wanted accused after he was untraceable in a criminal case registered against him by local builder Ganesh Wagh.

Wagh filed a petition with the Bombay High Court last year, alleging that Angre had demanded extortion money from him and threatened him with dire consequences if he did not pay up.

The high court had directed the Thane police to arrest Angre and interrogate him. However, the police in an affidavit said he could not be traced.

Angre through his advocate filed an anticipatory bail application with the Thane court but it was rejected. Later, he moved the Supreme Court, which also rejected his application.

The Thane court last week declared Angre as an absconding accused.

Friday afternoon, Angre surrendered himself at a local police station here after which he was produced before the court.
