Government denies sanction to try cops, CBI closes case

New Delhi : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Wednesday filed a closure report against 13 Delhi policemen accused in a six-year-old fake encounter case citing the denial of prosecution sanction by the lieutenant governor.

The investigating agency had approached the Delhi Police commissioner for permission to put the accused policemen on trial.

However, the CBI was forced to file the closure report, as Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna did not grant the prosecution sanction stating this case does not deserve sanction for prosecution.

Rupinder alias Kanu Jat was allegedly killed Jan 11, 2002, by the special staff of east Delhi Police in an encounter in Trilokpuri area. The CBI had taken over the probe into the matter following directions of the Delhi High Court.

Investigations revealed that deceased’s fingerprints were not found on the revolver recovered from him and the weapon was also not in his hand.
