By IRNA

Islamabad : President Pervez Musharraf Friday announced that he would support the new government and hoped that the new set up will continue his economic policies as well as fight against extremism and terrorism.

This is the first public statement of President Musharraf after the February parliamentary elections, won by his rivals: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) of slain former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and Pakistan Muslin League (PML-N) of opposition leader Nawaz Sharif.

Speaking at the water-supply scheme at Jacobabad in Sindh province resident Musharraf said moderates emerged victorious in the elections, especially in the North West Frontier Province, expressing the confidence that the new leadership will curb extremist forces and end chaos.

He hoped that the new government will continue his economic and policies against terrorists and extremists.

Musharraf’s rival group PPP, PML-N and nationalist group ‘Awami National Party’ have agreed to form a coalition government in the center and province.

They are near to achieve two-third majority in the parliament which can impeach the President and also amend the constitution to scrap his powers to dissolve the parliament.

“I will support the government. I hope that the new governments in center and provinces should complete its five-year constitutional term,” President Musharraf said.

The opposition groups are demanding of President Musharraf to summon the National Assembly sessions to elect the new Prime Minister.

President Musharraf said that the session of National and provincial assemblies would be summoned within two weeks.

“The country’s economy is growing but I admit there are also difficulties.

The new government must comprehend the problems and find out solution,” he said.

“I want fight struggle against terrorism and extremism must continue. If we could not succeed on economic front and in fight against extremism and terrorism, the failure would create hurdles in the way of economic prosperity,” the President said.

“I am happy that the extremists faced defeat and moderate forces emerged victorious in the elections, especially in the North West. I hope they will end chaos and curb extremists and
terrorists,” Pervez Musharraf said.

He rejected the impression that the February 18 elections were rigged, saying the whole world is saying that the polls were fair, free, transparent and peaceful.

Referring to latest local media reports about his resignation, President Musharraf said that some elements are spreading misunderstanding about him, saying these elements do not care about the country and the people.
