According to US army spokesman Col. David Johnson, four American soldiers were wounded in the blast and two armored vehicles were damaged.

However, insurgent sources claimed responsibility for the attack and confirmed that the explosion took the lives of eight US soldiers, apart from destroying two armored vehicles of the convoy.

Eyewitnesses also told press that several vehicles were damaged by the explosion and various ambulances came to the blast scene.

Rebel spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told media that “the foreign occupation troops and their Afghan slaves should be ready for the Mujahideen and guerrilla suicide bombers attacks this summer.”

A United Nations report said that 2007 was deadliest in the country since the 2001 US-led invasion with more than 8,000 dead, chiefly civilians.

Insurgents detonated 140 suicide bombs in Afghanistan last year, a record number, added the UN text.
