Russia, Ukraine Try Settle Gas Dispute

Moscow : Russia and Ukraine smoked the pipe of peace again on Thursday by signing an agreement that provisionally settles their disagreements on the issue.

However, uncertainty prevails among EU leaders, who know that the Ukrainian political instability and the agreed prices might unearth, by early 2009 or even before, the ax of the hydrocarbon war.

The document signed by president of Russian Gazprom board of directors, Alexei Miller, and his peer of Ukrainian Naftogaz, Oleg Dubina, sets the price of Russian fuel delivered in January-February 2008 at $315.

Uncertainty prevails because the pact will expire on December 31, 2008, negotiations will continue and the price of $360 foe every 1,000 cubic meters from Central Asia will come into force as of January 2009.

In addition to this, there are contradictions between Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko and Prime Minister Yulia Timoshenko, reflected in breaches of previous agreements with the Kremlin.

Aware of the Sword of Damocles pending over the EU, dependent on a 25 percent on Russian hydrocarbon coming through Ukraine, Javier Solana, EU High Representative for the Common Foreign Security Policy, called on the parties to comply with the new agreement.
