All efforts on to save Sarabjit: PM

New Delhi : The Indian government has taken up at the “highest level” with Pakistan the case of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh who is expected to be hanged April 1, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Tuesday.

Manmohan Singh said this in a letter to Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal, who urged the government to intercede on behalf of Sarabjit Singh, who has been accused of carrying out bombings in Pakistan.

According to the prime minister’s office, “the government of India has taken up the matter with the Pakistan government at the highest level”.

Manmohan Singh also told Badal that the government was making all possible efforts to seek a reprieve for Sarabjit Singh.

Only Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf can grant clemency to Sarabjit Singh.

The condemned man’s sister, Dalbir Kaur, met Congress MP Rahul Gandhi Monday.
