“The government can now use the law as a legal basis to issue regulations to crack down on cyber crimes which are showing an upward trend,” House Speaker Agung Laksono said here on Wednesday.

He said cyber crimes had caused great losses to the state and people.

“We hope the newly enacted law will facilitate efforts to combat cyber crimes,” he said.

On the increasing number of pornographic websites in the country, Agung said it would be dealt with in certain articles in the Bill on Pornography which was now still in a drafting process.

“Maybe the matter (of pornographic website) will be discussed in detail in deliberations on the Bill,” he said.

The House of Representatives at a plenary session Tuesday agreed to pass into law a Bill on Information and Electronic Transactions (ITE).

The bill has been under the House deliberations for a long time since it was submitted by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in September 2005.

In order to wrap up deliberations on the bill, members of the House conducted a number of comparative studies in other countries.
