This request was made by the Muslim member of the Bosnian three-man state presidency, Haris Silajdzic, after UNESCO Director General Koichiro Matsuura handed him a certificate on the addition of the bridge to the organization’s World Heritage List.

Speaking to reporters following the meeting, Matsuuru said UNESCO recognized the bridge’s “outstanding universal value,” adding that “its cultural value transcends both national and cultural borders.” The bridge is a masterpiece of Ottoman architecture and was constructed in the 16th century over the Drina River, and links Bosnia and Serbia. It is the second monument in Bosnia that UNESCO has recognized, after the Old Bridge in Mostar.
