Ramallah : Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has said that the Arab Summit to be held in Syria late this month must back up the Mideast peace initiative.
Speaking at a news conference Wednesday with his Bulgarian counterpart, Georgi Parvanov, Abbas expressed hope that Israel would consider the Arab peace initiative to achieve everlasting peace, adding that Palestine would call on Arab states to back up the plan politically as well as financially.
He stressed that negotiations on the final status issues for peace are to continue at all levels, noting that there were several obstacles to be taken care of to achieve security in the region.
The status of Palestinian refugees is one of the most important files during discussions with the Israelis, he said.
Meanwhile, Abbas asked his Bulgarian counterpart to participate in efforts to end Israeli aggression on Palestinians, stressing that he would support Moscow’s peace conference to boost the table of negotiations which were agreed on in the Annapolis peace conference held in the United States.
On his part, Parvanov said that Moscow’s peace conference might provide a positive outcome through the signing of a peace deal by the end of 2008.
He also affirmed that his country was willing to discuss matters of bolstering relations with the Palestinians through business meetings.
