Ramallah : Palestinian National Authority (PNA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas vowed Monday that the PNA is exerting efforts to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, calling on Gazans to end any attacks on Israelis.
“We exert efforts with the Egyptians to reach a ceasefire with Israel,” Abbas told the official PNA Television after he chaired a weekly cabinet meeting.
“I appeal to the residents of the Gaza Strip to bear in mind their highest interests and halt carrying out anything (rockets attacks) in order to reach a ceasefire agreement and start a new stage of life,” urged Abbas.
Israel threatened to carry out a large-scale military operation in the Gaza Strip if Gaza militant groups continue launching homemade rockets at Israeli towns and communities.
Israel imposed a strict blockade on the Gaza Strip after Hamas movement took control of the enclave last June. The blockade has affected all aspects of life due to shortage of fuel and basic supplies.
Asked about his tour to Jordan, Russia and the United States, Abbas said “this tour has a political implication … we want to speak with the Americans about the future of the region and about pushing forward the peace process.”
Abbas added he would work with the Russians on holding a peace conference on the Middle East, and with the Americans in order to reach an agreement on permanent status issues soon.
