Iran, India stress need for regional cooperation to solve crisis in Afghanistan

Kabul : Iran’s Embassy in Kabul here Wednesday issued a communique announcing Iran and India’s emphasis on need for regional cooperation to solve lingering crisis in Afghanistan.

The agreement on such need was reached between India’s new Ambassador to Kabul Jayant Prassad and the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Ambassador here, Fada-Hossein Maaleki.

According to IRNA correspondent in Kabul, the two sides referred to comprehensive regional cooperation as “an effective measure aimed at solving the Afghan crisis,” while considering global assistance in that regard, led by the United Nations “important” in that respect.

The two sides during the meeting also emphasized that solving the ongoing problems in Afghanistan by resorting to military force would not be possible.

The Iranian and Indian ambassadors were also agreed that approximation of regional and global societies’ viewpoints towards one another aimed at establishment of security, stability and economic development in Afghanistan would be a logical and rational way to support the Afghan nation’s interests.

In two countries’ joint communique it is also mentioned that Iran and India’s viewpoints on Afghanistan are mainly identical and they have shared interests there, for achieving which “it is necessary to assist Afghanistan to reach a stage of economic blossoming.” Iran and India have also welcomed the idea of assisting the process of constructing the 230 kilometer road from Zaranj to Delaram that would assist the economic growth and development of that country through exchange of goods, and provide for Afghanistan’s access to the free waters of the Persian Gulf.

The Islamic Republic of Iran’s Ambassador Fada-Hossein Maaleki during the meeting expressed regret over getting killed of a number of Indian engineers who were contributing to the reconstruction process of Afghanistan, condemning all types of terrorist moves.

The two sides meanwhile voiced support for Central Afghan Government’s holding of a free and independent election in which the majority of Afghans would participate amid proper security of the election polls and stability of the country.

Afghanistan’s Presidential and Provincial Councils elections are scheduled to be held jointly on October 10th, 2009.

Jayant Prassad and Maaleki finally emphasized the need for establishment of security at the time of elections, the global society’s support for holding a free and independent election there, and restoration of peace and order at chaotic regions of Afghanistan.
