Moscow : A Georgian parliamentarian has denied the possibility that Georgia could start military campaign against Abkhazia, according to news reaching here.
“These statements only indicate that Russia is prepared to resort to extreme measures to unleash a war in Georgia. We are not planning any military operations,” Givi Targamadze, head of the Georgian parliamentary defense and security committee, was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying.
“The international community should understand that the danger of aggression is emanating from Russia and take every measure to safeguard Georgia from provocation in the separatist regions,” Targamadze said. Tbilisi “is ready to counter any aggression,” he added.
The Georgian Interior Ministry said no extra troops have been brought into the Kodori Gorge and the Zugdidi district, which borders on Abkhazia. “There are only police units permitted by agreements there,” a ministry spokesman said.
Russian Foreign Ministry Envoy for CIS Affairs Valery Kenyaykin said earlier in the day that Russia will have to respond with military methods if Georgia launches a military operation in Abkhazia.
