Arab intellectual property conference kicks off in Cairo

Cairo : The second regional conference on intellectual property challenges in the Arab world kicked off at the Arab League headquarters on Saturday, in cooperation with the Arab Lawyers’ Union and the Regional Intellectual Property Institute at Hilwan University.

Institute Director Maha Bikheet said in her opening speech that the conference would discuss a number of important issues, including intellectual rights for patents and inventions, as well as protecting pharmaceutical patent rights, and other issues pertaining to internet and digital technology.

She noted that the conference coincided with the World Intellectual Property Day, celebrated on April 24, saying that this was an occasion to let inventors and innovative individuals know that their contributions were appreciated and that their rights were protected.

On his part, Chairman of the Arab Lawyers’ Union Sameh Ashour said the meeting would focus on teaching intellectual property at Arab universities, how to benefit from the inventions of Arabs, and studying the impact of international intellectual property laws in the pharmaceutical and technological fields.
