Chhattisgarh wants expansion of SC/ST list

By IANS,

Raipur : With assembly polls due in November, the Chhattisgarh government will soon be sending a list of 10 groups to the central government for inclusion among Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

“The state government will soon send a list of about 10 castes presently being clubbed under Other Backward Class (OBC) to the central government for their inclusion in Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe categories,” Satyanand Rathia, minister of state for food, told reporters here Saturday.

He said that a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Raman Singh Friday cleared the proposal.

As per the decision, groups such as Kewat, Dheebar, Kahar, Mallah, Khadhia, Pardhi, Sawra and Sapera will be recommended for Scheduled Tribe category and Chik and Mahra for Scheduled Caste category.

The minister said that at least 100,000 traditionally poverty-stricken families of these groups would be entitled to avail government facilities available to SC/ST categories once they are included in the list by the central government.
