Serial quakes rock eastern Indonesia

Jakarta : A series of earthquakes with magnitudes of 5.6 and 5.3 struck eastern parts of Indonesia on Wednesday morning, no damage or casualties were reported, local meteorology agency said here.

The 5.6 magnitude quake jolted at 06:27 Jakarta time (2327GMT Tuesday) with the epicenter at 184 kilometers northeast in Ende town of East Nusa Ternggara province and at 202 kilometers under sea bed, an official of the agency Agung Mulyoutomo told Xinhua.

The other quake hit at 05:41 Jakarta time (2241GMT Tuesday) with the epicenter at 213 kilometers northwest in Saumlaki town of Maluku province and at 134 kilometers under sea bed, said Mulyoutomo.

In 2004, over 170,000 people were dead in Aceh province in northern tip of Sumatra Island after a tsunami triggered by a powerful quake devastated coastal areas of the province and other countries in Southeast Asia.

Indonesia lies in a vulnerable zone called “the Pacific Ring of Fire” where two continental plates meet that cause frequent volcanic movements.
