UN Calls for Emergency Myanmar Aid

By Prensa Latina,

United Nations : UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon recommended priority mobilization to Myanmar of all forms of emergency resources and capabilities.

In a declaration released here, the official expressed deep concern over the welfare of the people of Myanmar during this moment of national tragedy and noted the Government decision to continue its intent of holding a referendum on May 10.

Yangon authorities announced that the process would be delayed in the regions mostly affected by the hurricane that battered the nation last weekend and causing more than 20,500 deaths and about 40,000 disappeared.

Due to the disaster facing Myanmar today, the Secretary General considers that it would be prudent to concentrate resources and capabilities to support emergency efforts, said the spokeswoman Marie Okabe.

Assistant secretary for Humanitarian Affairs, John Holmes, will launch an international call of aid for Myanmar where about a million persons are homeless.
