Bhubaneswar : A deep depression that had formed over Bay of Bengal crossed the Orissa coast early Friday, triggering more rainfall in the state already lashed by heavy showers.
The depression lay centred close to Puri in the morning and will weaken gradually, said an official of the meteorological department.
"Under its influence, rain and thundershowers are likely to occur at many places across the state in the next 24 hours," the official told IANS.
Strong winds are also likely to prevail along the coastal areas, he said, adding that fishermen have been advised not to venture out to sea.
Heavy overnight showers accompanied by gusty winds damaged hundreds of mud houses, uprooted trees and disrupted road traffic at certain places in Orissa's coastal and southern districts, a state official said.
