UN Experts to Develop Antiquake Structure

United Nations : Salvano Briceno, director of the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) called to up date Construction methods a quake prone areas to reduce damages.

Collapsing buildings claim the largest number of victims, like Pakistan in 2005, Iran (2003) and Monday’s in China.

Hundred thousand buildings, including numerous schools, collapsed due to the deadly quake that rocked south east China, said Briceno, adding that “we know how to make buildings further resistant to earthquakes.”

Yet the knowledge is not widely known among housing, schools and hospital developers so saving lives, schools and health care facilities, among other key structure, need adjustment at quake-prone areas where vulnerability is leading death cause.

Briceno attends in Islamabad a conference on School Safety that closes today with the mission of working to improve security at Pakistani schools.

South east China was rocked by a 7.9 degree earthquake in the Richter scale that killed near 22,000 people and destroyed 200,000 buildings.
