Washington : The US Department of Defense advances plans to build a new jail in Afghanistan, confirming its intentions to run prisons in other countries.
The New York Times says the new prison will replace the cells at Bagram military base, north Kabul, that houses 630 inmates the White House considers terrorists.
President George W. Bush Administration announce its intentions to transfer them to a US-financed maximum security prison kept by local guards.
But the Pentagon now considers it too small to hold the possible wave of arrests in future anti-terrorist drive plus alleged poor conditions to justify the new construction.
The NYT says the US plan exposes true awareness of the need for new prisons with the escalating crusade and slow red tape since some prisoners have remained behind bars over five years without trial.
