New Delhi : At least 15 persons, including a policeman, were killed during clashes between members of Gujjar community and the police on Friday in Bharatpur district of Rajasthan state, police said. The Gujjar community was demanding Scheduled Caste status for them, which will ensure privileges to them announced by the government under this status.
The army has called out to control the situation, as the protesters uprooted rail track and disrupted road and rail traffic. The police opened fire on the demonstraters when they set on fire police vehicles and government property. A policeman was killed by the violent mob.
The Gujjar community staged demonstration at a time when the anniversary of the last demonstration is approaching in which 26 persons had lost their lives.
It was officially announced that ten columns of army (about 2,000 troops), about 200 additional Rapid Action Force (RAF) and 300 CRPF personnel were called out for deployment in the violence-hit area to assist the local administration.
