Berlin : The head of the German radical leftists the Left (Linke) party, Oskar Lafontaine harshly criticized NATO in his opening speech to the first-ever the Left party congress in the eastern city of Cottbus.
Lafontaine pointed out that NATO’s tactic has changed under American leadersip.
“We reject a NATO which intervenes throughout the world and breaks international law,” he added.
The Left does not support a foreign policy which is based on military mission, according to Lafontaine who was alluding to Germany’s continuing military presence in Afghanistan and the Balkan region.
There are presently 53 radical leftist legislators seated in Germany’s Parliament, making it the fourth largest faction.
Germany’s opposition alliance of ex-communists and disgruntled left-wing former Social Democrats, The Left, launched itself as a united party in mid-June 2007, in a bid to restore the social welfare state and an attack on Western “double standards” in the battle against terrorism.
The Left enjoys strong support in what used to be communist East Germany as well as the working class and student groups.
