Nanjing(China) : Wu Poh-hsiung, chairman of Taiwan’s ruling Kuomintang(KMT) party, Monday arrived in the capital of China’s southern province of Jiangsu as the first stop of his six-day mainland visit.
Invited by the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and General Secretary Hu Jintao, Wu will also visit Beijing and Shanghai, marking the first highest ranking meeting between Taiwan and mainland China in more than six decades.
Chen Yunlin, director of the Taiwan work office of the Communist Party of China central committee, received him.
“People in Taiwan have shown deep concern over the earthquake and the affected and quickly donated money and relief materials. Let me, on behalf of compatriots from the mainland, extend gratitude to them,” Chen said.
“Currently, the mainland-Taiwan relations have entered a spring for peaceful development,” he said, expressing hope that both parties would enhance exchange and cooperation in the new circumstances.
Wu has urged to create a win-win situation on the basis of the 1992 consensus.
In addition to expressing condolences to victims of the devastating earthquake in Sichuan province on behalf of his party and the people of Taiwan, the KMT chairman will also put forward opinions on promoting mutually beneficial cooperation across the Taiwan Straits, sources with the KMT Central Committee said.
