New York : A South Asian American professor has been appointed dean of the reputed Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland.
The university announced last week that G. Anandalingam, currently senior associate dean and professor of management science at the Smith School, will take over as dean July 1.
Smith School has been ranked among the top 25 business schools in the US and in the top 10 for its cutting-edge research.
Nariman Farvardin, senior vice-president for academic affairs and provost at the University in Maryland, who made the announcement after a national search for dean, said: “Anandalingam takes over the Smith School at a time when strong leadership and vision are needed to implement the university’s bold new strategic plan, which charts a course for Maryland to be one of the world’s best universities within 10 years.”
Among his top priorities, Anandalingam said, are continuing aggressive fund-raising of his predecessor, to try to double the school’s endowment to $100 million, expand its global focus and presence, and attract more high-profile and renowned faculty.
The Cambridge-educated Anandalingam was born in England, raised in Colombo, Bangalore and New Delhi. He came to the US in 1975 to do his Ph.D. at Harvard University.
He taught at the University of Pennsylvania for 15 years where he was the National Centre Professor of Resource and Technology Management with appointments in Systems Engineering at its Wharton School.
Anandalingam has regularly consulted with both Fortune 1000 and start-up companies, including KPMG, GE Capital, AT&T, Nokia, MCI, Baysoft, Amtrak, and the World Bank.
